Scotland enjoys a global reputation for educational excellence and Edinburgh naturally leads the way as home to an impressive collection of universities, colleges and independent schools.

The main campus of The University of Edinburgh occupies a large part of the area immediately adjacent to at 123 Royal Mile.  Founded in the 16th century, the University consistently ranks amongst the world’s top 20 universities and today plays host to around 30,000 students from around the world.

Napier University on the city’s western outskirts is particularly renowned for science, computing and business studies while Queen Margaret University on the other side of town focusses strongly on the arts and humanities.

The Edinburgh College of Art is only a few minutes’ walk away from 123 Royal Mile in Lauriston Place where you’ll also find one of Scotland’s oldest independent schools, George Heriot’s.  Other top independent schools nearby include George Watson’s College,  Erskine Stewarts Melville School, St George’s school for girls and the boys only Merchiston Castle .
